What is HTTPS / TLS?
Encrypted, authenticated HTTP — the padlock in the address bar.
TLS (the successor of SSL) encrypts traffic between browser and server and proves the server is who it claims to be via certificates. HTTPS is simply HTTP over TLS; modern APIs also use it for server-to-server calls.
